The Clark County coroner’s office announced Wednesday that human remains found at Lake Mead in Nevada last summer have been identified as those of a 52-year-old man who went missing in 1998.
Claude Russell Pensinger, of Las Vegas, was 52 at the time of his disappearance in July 1998. His bones were found over the course of three days in July and August on newly exposed shoreline near the Boulder Beach swimming area.
According to a Las Vegas Review-Journal article from July 20, 1998, Pensinger was fishing when he disappeared from his boat, which was found running in circles. The remains were found on three different dates — July 25, Aug. 6 and Aug. 16 — but all were his, the office said.
Pensinger’s brother identified him as a Navy and Coast Guard veteran, the documents said. The skeletal remains were identified by the county medical examiner’s office as those of Claude Russell Pensinger.
The cause of death is still unknown, but the coroner’s office said it is not suspicious. Lake Mead has been diminished due to drought, and the newly exposed shoreline may have revealed Pensinger’s remains.
