A Massachusetts man accused of murdering his wife and disposing of her remains had hired a private investigator to follow her before she went missing because he suspected she was having an affair, prosecutors said Thursday.

Brian Walshe, of Cohasset, Massachusetts, appeared in court Thursday morning for his arraignment on charges related to the disappearance of his wife, Ana Walshe, on New Year’s Day.

Norfolk Assistant District Attorney Greg Connor alleged that Walshe’s mother hired a private investigator “with his input and direction” on Dec. 26 to follow Ana Walshe in Washington, D.C., where she lived during the week for her job at Tishman Speyer, a real estate company.

Connor also said that Walshe was motivated to claim his wife’s more than $1 million in life insurance benefits, which he had taken out shortly before her disappearance.

Walshe pleaded not guilty to all charges and is being held without bail. His attorney, John Hayes, said that Walshe is “innocent until proven guilty” and that he is “looking forward to his day in court.”

Ana Walshe’s body has not been found, and the investigation is ongoing.
