Veteran conservative commentator Geraldo Rivera has become one of the first Fox News personalities to criticize Tucker Carlson following his abrupt departure from the network this week.
In a tweet, Rivera said, “I don’t wish ill on anybody, but there is no doubt ― as I said at the time ― Tucker Carlson’s perverse January 6 conspiracy theory was ‘bullshit.’”
Carlson had previously made a videotaped statement in which he criticized the state of public discourse on U.S. television, saying, “Both political parties and their donors have reached consensus on what benefits them and they actively collude to shut down any conversation about it.”
The exact reason for Carlson’s departure remains unclear, although The New York Times reported that newly-unearthed offensive private messages sent by the host may have played a large part.
Carlson had been the host of the highest-rated cable news program in the key age demographic on the most-watched U.S. cable news network. He did not directly address his departure from Fox in the videotaped statement.
Rivera’s criticism of Carlson follows the host’s departure from Fox News and is a reminder of the controversy surrounding Carlson’s peddling of false information. It remains to be seen how other Fox News personalities will respond to Carlson’s departure.
