Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination Wednesday, touting his long career in public service and a commonsense conservative approach on the economy, crime and border security.

At a press conference with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, President Joe Biden addressed concerns about his age in light of recent polling data, saying his age does not register with him.

“In this campaign for president, I stand alone in terms of my experience, record, and leadership,” Hutchinson said in his prepared remarks. He did not mention former President Donald Trump or any of his other declared or potential opponents, instead focusing on kitchen-table issues.

“It is about making the tough decisions to rebuild our economy; to give peace a chance through America’s strength, and to renew the American spirit of freedom,” he said.

Biden, 80, expressed confidence in his chances of winning against former President Donald Trump in 2024. He said he took a hard look at his age before deciding to run, and that he can’t even say how old he is.

Hutchinson, 72, is the latest Republican to join the crowded field of potential candidates for the 2024 presidential election. He joins former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former Vice President Mike Pence, and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, among others.
