Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, announced on Sunday that Jeff Shell was leaving the company “effective immediately” after an investigation into what the executive said was an “inappropriate relationship with a woman in the company.” On Monday, a lawyer for CNBC anchor and international correspondent Hadley Gamble revealed that the investigation stemmed from her client filing a complaint accusing Shell of sexual harassment and sex discrimination.

In a statement, Gamble’s lawyer, Suzanne McKie, said that her client had filed a complaint with NBCUniversal alleging that Shell had subjected her to “unwelcome sexual advances and other forms of harassment and discrimination.”

Shell, who had been the CEO of NBCUniversal since 2013, said in a statement that he had had an “inappropriate relationship with a woman at the company.” He did not provide any further details.

Comcast did not specify how Shell had violated company policy. However, the company said that it had taken the allegations seriously and had conducted a thorough investigation.

The incident has raised questions about the culture at NBCUniversal and the corporation’s commitment to protecting its employees from harassment and discrimination. It is unclear what steps the company will take to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
