On Saturday night, tragedy struck in Hebron, New York when a landowner opened fire on a group of four friends who had mistakenly pulled into his driveway. 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis was killed in the incident.
Gillis and her friends had been searching for a party when they took a wrong turn and ended up in the driveway of 65-year-old Kevin Monahan. Blake Walsh, 19, of Cambridge, New York, was driving the car with Gillis and two other passengers. Walsh recalled that two rounds were fired in their direction as they attempted to leave the driveway. Gillis was fatally shot as they drove away.
Monahan was arrested on a second-degree murder charge and remains detained pending a bond hearing. One of his neighbors, Adam Matthews, who runs an auto repair shop in nearby Salem, said Monahan had become more and more upset in recent years at people driving onto his land by mistake.
Gillis’ family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses. Friends and family have expressed their shock and grief over the incident, with one friend saying, “Kaylin was a beautiful, kind, and loving person. She was always there for her friends and family and she will be greatly missed.”
