Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Barred from Speaking at House Homeland Security Committee Hearing After Calling Secretary Mayorkas a “Liar

At a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Wednesday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) called Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas a “liar”, prompting Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.), the chair of the committee, to bar her from speaking any further.

Democrats on the committee twice sought to strike Greene’s remarks from the record, but the only bipartisan agreement came when she called Mayorkas a liar. Greene also accused Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) of having a “sexual relationship with a Chinese spy” without offering any evidence.

In response to the incident, Rep. Mark Green said he plans to speak with Greene about her comments. “I plan to have a conversation with Congresswoman Greene about her comments and the decorum expected of members of the committee,” he said.

Greene’s comments have been widely criticized by both Democrats and Republicans. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called the comments “disgraceful” and said they “have no place in the House of Representatives.”

The incident has raised questions about the level of decorum expected of members of Congress, and whether Greene’s comments were appropriate for a congressional hearing. It remains to be seen what action, if any, will be taken against Greene in response to her remarks.
