Berlin-based Artist Rejects Award After Revealing AI-Generated Submission Sparking Debate on Role of AI in Art

A Berlin-based artist has rejected an award from the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards after revealing that his submission was generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Boris Eldagsen won the creative open category with his entry “Pseudomnesia: The Electrician.”

Eldagsen said he submitted his image to the competition in a bid to test whether such competitions are prepared for the entrance of realistic, AI-generated submissions. He hoped his actions would open up the conversation around the issue and lead to “separate competitions for AI-generated images.”

Organizers said they were made aware of some AI involvement, but said there had been “deliberate” attempts to mislead them. The eerie black and white image shows two women from different generations — the older woman appearing to hang on to the younger woman from behind.

Eldagsen said he did not initially disclose that his artwork was AI-generated and he was surprised to win the award. “I am not comfortable with the idea of a machine-generated artwork being presented as a human achievement,” he said in a statement last week that was shared on his website. “Therefore I will not accept the award.”

The artist’s decision to reject the award has sparked a debate about the role of AI in art. Some argue that AI-generated art is a valid form of expression and should be recognized, while others believe that it undermines the value of human creativity.
