U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has reported that a convoy of U.S. Embassy vehicles in Sudan came under fire on Monday, but those inside were unharmed. The attackers are believed to be linked to a powerful force fighting with the Sudanese army for control of the country.

The fighting between the country’s army and a paramilitary group has spread across the nation since erupting Saturday, and the university area is a particular hotspot due to its proximity to the General Command of the Armed Forces. Warplanes have been seen hovering overhead and nearby buildings have been destroyed by fire.

Students, faculty members, and staff at the University of Khartoum have been trapped inside campus buildings for more than three days as artillery and gunfire rain down around them in Sudan’s capital. Food and water are running low, and one student has already been killed by gunfire.

Blinken said he spoke by phone with Sudan’s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, to urge them to protect civilians and allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need.

The U.S. is continuing to monitor the situation in Sudan and is working to ensure the safety of its citizens. Blinken has called on all sides to cease fire and work towards a peaceful resolution.
