An 85-year-old Missouri man has been charged with two felony counts in connection with the shooting of a 16-year-old Black teenager who rang the wrong doorbell while trying to pick up his younger siblings.

Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Zachary Thompson announced Monday that Andrew D. Lester, a White man, has been charged with one count of assault in the first degree and one count of armed criminal action.

The victim, Ralph Yarl, was shot twice, once in the head and once in the arm, when he went to the wrong house to pick up his siblings on April 13.

Thompson said that Lester faces a maximum punishment of life in prison in the assault charge and three to 15 years for the alleged gun crime. A warrant has been issued for Lester’s arrest, but he is not currently in custody.

The shooting has sparked outrage in the community and has been widely condemned by civil rights groups. The Clay County Prosecutor’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident and is urging anyone with information to come forward.
