Louisville Mass Shooting Leaves Five Dead and Eight Injured, Sparking Debate Over Gun Control Laws

On Tuesday, police body camera footage was released from the chaotic scene of a mass shooting at a bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. The incident occurred on Monday, and is the 146th mass shooting of the year according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The footage was taken from two wounded officers’ lapels, and shows the officers responding to the shooting that killed five people and injured eight others. One of the officers, a rookie, was shot in the head within minutes of arriving at the scene. His partner was grazed by a bullet and sought cover while still trying to take down the shooter.

The victims of the shooting included bank employees, an “incredible friend,” a beloved parishioner, and a “huge fan and supporter” of the community. The tragedy comes exactly two weeks after three children and three adults were killed in a shooting at a Christian school in neighboring Tennessee.

The incident has sparked a fierce debate between Democratic and Republican state lawmakers over gun control. Democratic lawmakers have called for stricter gun control laws, while Republican lawmakers have argued that the current laws are sufficient.
