A 58-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition Sunday morning after being bitten by a shark while surfing off the coast of Honolulu, Hawaii.
The attack occurred shortly before 7 a.m. near Kewalo Basin, a popular surfing spot just north of the tourist mecca of Waikiki. The victim was surfing a spot called Kewalos off Kewalo Basin Harbor.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Honolulu Fire Department responded to the scene and administered life-saving treatment to the victim. Before they arrived, however, nearby surfers had already helped apply a tourniquet to his wound.
The victim’s identity has not been released. It is unclear what type of shark was involved in the attack.
