The incident occurred at around 3:38 p.m. local time, when an officer with the Chetek Police Department conducted a traffic stop. During the stop, an exchange of gunfire occurred and the Chetek officer and a Cameron Police Department officer were both struck.

The two officers were pronounced dead at the scene, while the “involved individual” was taken to a hospital and was later also pronounced dead. Authorities did not provide information on what prompted the traffic stop or how the shooting unfolded.

The WDOJ said it is leading the investigation into the incident and that the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Barron County Sheriff’s Office, and the Chetek and Cameron Police Departments are assisting.
