A Michigan man has been charged with one count of misdemeanor aggravated assault after allegedly hitting a grocery store clerk over the head with a frozen fish on Sunday. According to the Macomb County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the suspect, MD Jobul Hussain, became upset that the Desi Fruit Market in Warren had closed its fish counter due to Ramadan.
Hussain allegedly used a four-pound hilsa fish, a type of herring, to assault the clerk who worked behind the fish counter. Warren Police were able to apprehend Hussain in connection with the altercation. Hussain was arraigned in district court on Monday and given a $5,000 bond.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido released a statement about the incident, saying, “I never thought I’d have to say this, but if you assault someone with a fish in our county you will be prosecuted. A frozen fish is dangerous if you use it to hit someone on the head.”
The incident has been met with shock and disbelief by many in the community. It is unclear what motivated Hussain to allegedly commit such a crime. He is currently awaiting trial and faces up to one year in jail if convicted.
