At least three people were killed in a mass shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville on Monday. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee (R) identified two of the victims as longtime family friends Cindy Peak and Katherine Koonce, both teachers at the school. Maria Colomy, an art instructor at Nossi College of Art & Design in Nashville, taught the shooter, identified by police as Audrey Hale, for two semesters in 2017.
Colomy described Hale as a small, quiet student and said her work was “whimsical” and “childlike.” On the first day of class, Hale could not figure out how to set up a password, became upset and had to leave the classroom. Colomy also told CNN that Hale appeared to be “suffering” in social media posts over the past year.
Governor Lee mourned the victims of the “horrific act of violence” and said “Maria woke up this morning without one of her best friends, Cindy Peak.” He added that Cindy, Maria and Katherine had been family friends for decades.
Colomy said she could have seen Hale doing children’s books for a living. She said it was a “tragedy” that the shooting had happened and expressed her condolences to the victims’ families.
The shooting is still under investigation and no motive has been determined. The Covenant School has released a statement expressing their sorrow and offering their support to the families of the victims.
