Paul Rusesabagina, the man who inspired the film “Hotel Rwanda” and was freed by Rwanda last week from a terrorism sentence, has returned to the United States and is set to reunite with his family.
According to a State Department official, Rusesabagina arrived at the US Army’s Brooke Army Medical Center at Joint Base San Antonio on Wednesday. The official declined to provide additional details, citing “privacy reasons and out of respect to the family.”
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby had previously confirmed that Rusesabagina was in Doha, Qatar and would be making his way back to the U.S. Rusesabagina’s plane touched down in Houston Wednesday afternoon and he will travel next to a military hospital in San Antonio.
Rusesabagina was arrested in August 2018 and charged with terrorism-related offenses. He was held in prison in Kigali for more than two years before being released last week.
Rusesabagina’s daughter, Carine Kanimba, expressed her joy on Twitter after her father’s release. “PAUL RUSESABAGINA IS FREE,” she wrote, along with a smiling photo of her father.
The U.S. government is focused on ensuring that Rusesabagina and his family’s well-being are prioritized, and that all assistance available is offered in an appropriate and timely manner. It is unclear when Rusesabagina will be reunited with his family, but it is expected to be soon.
