On Monday, a tragic shooting at The Covenant School, a private Catholic school in Nashville, Tennessee, left three adults and three nine-year-olds dead. The shooter, identified by police as former student Audrey Hale, 28, was killed by police at the scene.

According to Nashville city council member Russ Pulley, a witness told him that the head of the Covenant School, Katherine Koonce, spent her last moments trying to protect the children in her care from the shooter. Pulley, a former FBI agent, said he knew law enforcement officers tried to get to the shooter as quickly as possible.

Surveillance video showed the shooter was able to get into the school by shooting out a side door. “The witness said Katherine Koonce was on a Zoom call, heard the shots and abruptly ended the Zoom call and left the office. The assumption from there is that she headed towards the shooter,” Pulley said.

The shooter then traversed the building, going to the second floor and “firing multiple shots.” The shooter was killed within 14 minutes of the first 911 call. It’s not clear when the six victims were killed or how they encountered the shooter.

The tragedy has left the community of Nashville in shock and mourning. The Covenant School has set up a memorial fund to help the families of the victims. The Nashville community is coming together to support those affected by this tragedy.
