A U.S. Senate staffer was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being stabbed in Washington, D.C. on Saturday afternoon. According to a police affidavit reviewed by CBS News, the staffer suffered potential brain bleeding and a punctured lung in the attack.
The affidavit said Glynn Neal, 42, attacked and stabbed Phil Todd as he exited a northeast Washington, D.C. restaurant. Witnesses said Todd struggled with the suspect and was left “bleeding from the head.” Todd’s statement to police indicated the stabbing was random in nature, with the suspect not saying anything to him or demanding anything before the alleged attack.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), for whom Todd works, released a statement to ABC News on Monday. “This past weekend a member of my staff was brutally attacked in broad daylight in Washington, D.C.,” Paul said. “I ask you to join Kelley (Paul’s wife) and me in praying for a speedy and complete recovery, and thanking the first responders, hospital staff, and police for their diligent actions.”
The motive for the attack is still unknown. Police are continuing to investigate the incident. Todd remains hospitalized in stable condition.
