On Tuesday morning, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department released body camera footage of the moment officers Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo confronted and killed the shooter at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee. The shooter, Audrey Hale, 28, had killed six people, including three nine-year-olds, in the deadliest US school shooting in nearly a year.

The officers rushed up a stairwell and moved down two long hallways before confronting Hale, who was standing under a large window in what appears to be an atrium. Engelbert’s body camera footage shows him confronting the shooter from a corner diagonally across from the window. Someone yelled, “reloading,” and Engelbert immediately shot multiple rounds toward the shooter.

The Covenant School, a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church, released a statement expressing their heartbreak and grief. “We are grieving tremendous loss and are in shock coming out of the terror that shattered our school and church,” the statement read.

The shooting is the 19th school or university shooting so far in 2023 that left at least one person wounded, according to a CNN count. The community of Nashville is still reeling from the tragedy, and many have expressed their support and condolences.
