A civil trial between Gwyneth Paltrow and a 76-year-old retired optometrist, Terry Sanderson, is underway in Utah. Sanderson is suing Paltrow for more than $300,000 in damages, claiming that the actor-turned-lifestyle influencer was “out of control” and skied into him, resulting in four broken ribs.
On Thursday, Paltrow’s attorneys asked Sanderson’s daughter, Polly Grasham, about emails exchanged with her father about missing GoPro camera footage that they called “the most important piece of evidence” at trial. Steve Owens, Paltrow’s attorney, also asked Grasham about the possibility that the lawsuit was filed against Paltrow because she was famous.
Paltrow is countersuing for $1 and attorney’s fees, claiming Sanderson caused the crash. The incident occurred at Deer Valley Resort in 2016, and attorneys for both sides have tried to establish who was the uphill skier – a point of etiquette on slopes that could also determine who is at fault.
Sanderson is expected to take the stand on Friday, and Paltrow herself may also testify. The trial is expected to continue through the weekend.
