At least two people are dead and nine are unaccounted for after an explosion rocked a chocolate factory in West Reading, Pennsylvania on Friday, authorities said.

The explosion occurred at the R.M. Palmer Company facility just before 5 p.m., West Reading Police Chief Wayne Holben said in a press conference on Friday night. Between six and eight people were also taken for medical attention in the blast.

“There is no danger to the surrounding area at this time, however the borough is urging residents to avoid the area and follow directions of law enforcement and emergency personnel,” Holben added.

A spokeswoman for Reading Hospital said eight people were brought to the facility. One was transferred, two were in fair condition and the other five were released.

The cause for the explosion is unknown and remains under investigation, Holben said. Fire and smoke were seen at the scene of the explosion.

Local authorities are working to identify the missing individuals and are asking anyone with information to contact the West Reading Police Department at 610-655-6116. The investigation is ongoing.
