On Wednesday, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced that it had dropped domestic violence charges against Justin Roiland, the co-creator of the popular Cartoon Network animated series “Rick and Morty” and the voice of the show’s two title characters.

Kimberly Edds, a spokesperson for the district attorney’s office, said in a statement that the two felony counts involving a former girlfriend were dropped “due to a lack of sufficient evidence beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Roiland’s attorney said in a statement to NBC News that the district attorney’s office conducted a “thorough review of the facts.”

“I have always known that these claims were false — and I never had any doubt that this day would come,” he said.

Roiland also expressed his relief at the dismissal of the charges, but noted that he was still shaken by the “horrible lies” reported about him during the process.

The dismissal of the charges brings an end to a case that has been ongoing since October 2020, when Roiland was arrested and charged with two counts of domestic violence. The case had been closely watched by fans of the show, who had expressed their support for Roiland throughout the proceedings.
