A new report released by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) on Thursday has revealed that antisemitic incidents in the United States rose 36% in 2022, reaching their highest level since the ADL began recording them in 1979.
The report found that the number of antisemitic incidents in the US increased from 2021 in each of the major categories the ADL tracks, including harassment, vandalism, and assault. Harassment incidents rose by 29% to 2,298, vandalism incidents increased by 51% to 1,288, and assaults rose by 26% to 111.
The report also noted that visibly Orthodox Jews were targeted in more than half of all assault incidents nationwide. Stanford University police launched a hate crime investigation earlier this month after an antisemitic incident occurred on campus.
The ADL’s report comes as the organization is launching a new initiative to combat antisemitism and other forms of hate. The initiative, called “Stop the Hate,” will focus on education, advocacy, and community engagement.
“The alarming increase in antisemitic incidents in 2022 is a wake-up call that we all must do more to combat this hate,” said ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt. “We must take action to ensure that our communities are safe and secure for everyone.”
