Two inmates at the Newport News Jail Annex in Virginia escaped their cell Monday night, using primitively made tools to create a hole in the wall and exploit a weakness in the jail’s construction design.
John M. Garza, 37, and Arley V. Nemo, 43, were discovered missing during a routine head count around 7 p.m. Monday night, the Newport News Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The preliminary investigation found that the two inmates used tools made from a toothbrush and a metal object to access rebars between the walls — and then used the rebar to further their escape. After getting out, the two encountered containment walls and had to scale a wall to get away.
The two men were found at an IHOP restaurant nearby Tuesday morning, according to the sheriff’s office. The Newport News Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident.
The escape is the latest in a string of jailbreaks in the area. In April, two inmates escaped from the same jail annex by using a makeshift rope to climb out of a window. In May, two inmates escaped from the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail by using a rope made of bedsheets.
The Newport News Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information about the escape to contact them.
