Michigan Republican Party Under Fire for Post Using Holocaust Imagery to Score Political Points

The Michigan Republican Party has come under fire for a social media post published Wednesday morning that used a photograph of wedding rings taken from Holocaust victims by Nazi Germany with text over it that reads, “Before they collected all these wedding rings…they collected all the guns.”

The post, which was accompanied by the caption “History has shown us that the first thing a government does when it wants total control over its people is to disarm them,” was met with criticism from both Republicans and Democrats.

Matt Brooks, the CEO of the Republican Jewish Coalition, called the post “absolutely inappropriate and offensive and should be taken down.”

Michigan Democrats also condemned the post, with Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes saying in a statement, “It is beyond reprehensible that the Michigan Republican Party would use the Holocaust to score political points.”

The post has since been deleted, but the controversy has sparked a debate over the use of Holocaust imagery in political discourse.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) issued a statement condemning the post, saying, “The Holocaust should never be used as a political tool or to score political points. We urge the Michigan Republican Party to immediately remove the post and apologize for its insensitive use of Holocaust imagery.”

The Michigan Republican Party has yet to issue an apology or statement regarding the post.
