Key takeaways:

  • The US DC Circuit Court of Appeals ordered Corcoran to provide additional testimony and turn over documents about the former president as part of the criminal investigation.
  • The ruling adds momentum to the special counsel investigation as it seeks to secure evidence that could potentially incriminate the former president.
  • It remains to be seen what evidence will be uncovered and how Corcoran’s testimony will affect the outcome of the investigation.

A federal appeals court has rejected an attempt by former President Donald Trump to block his attorney Evan Corcoran from testifying in the investigation led by special counsel Jack Smith.

The three-judge panel on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling on Wednesday and ordered Corcoran to hand over records to Smith’s investigation. Corcoran is now scheduled to testify Friday before the grand jury investigating classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago.

The US DC Circuit Court of Appeals said that Corcoran must provide additional testimony and turn over documents about the former president as part of the criminal investigation into possible mishandling of classified documents. Corcoran came into Smith’s sights for his involvement in the Mar-a-Lago records investigation, in which Trump is suspected of illegally retaining classified government records after leaving office.

The order itself is sealed, as were the lower court’s rulings. The source said Trump’s side is unlikely to appeal to the Supreme Court.

The announcement from the appeals court adds momentum to the special counsel investigation as it seeks to secure evidence that could potentially incriminate the former president. The ruling comes less than a day after Trump sought to put Corcoran’s testimony on hold.

The investigation is ongoing and it remains to be seen what evidence will be uncovered. It is also unclear how the testimony of Corcoran will affect the outcome of the investigation.
