A 25-year-old first grade teacher from Newport News, Virginia, Abigail Zwerner, has spoken out for the first time since she was allegedly shot by a 6-year-old student in her classroom in January. In an interview with NBC’s “TODAY” show, Zwerner said she has tried to “stay positive” despite the physical and mental exhaustion she has experienced since the incident.
Zwerner was shot in her left hand and upper chest and has undergone four surgeries to help a bone. She told NBC’s Savannah Guthrie that she faces “obstacles and challenges” in her recovery.
“Some days are better than others, where I’m able to get out of bed and make it to my appointments,” Zwerner said. “Some days are not so good days where I can’t get up out of bed.”
Zwerner said her occupational therapy appointments have left her physically and mentally exhausted. She also said that she has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support she has received from her community.
“I’m so thankful for all the support I’ve received from family, friends, and even strangers,” Zwerner said. “It’s been really encouraging and it’s helped me stay positive.”
The full interview with Abigail Zwerner will air Tuesday on the “TODAY” show. Zwerner’s recovery remains ongoing, and she is hopeful that she will be able to return to teaching soon.
