YouTube has restored the channel of former President Donald J. Trump, more than two years after it was suspended for inciting violence. The decision, announced on Friday, means that Trump’s accounts on three major platforms from which he was suspended or restricted are now restored.
The video streaming company said the channel will be subject to its policies “just like any other channel” on YouTube. The company had previously said that Trump’s restrictions would be lifted when it believed the risk of real-world violence had subsided.
“We carefully evaluated the continued risk of real-world violence, while balancing the chance for voters to hear equally from major national candidates in the run up to an election,” YouTube said in a statement.
The move comes in time for Trump’s expected campaign for the 2024 election. Trump was suspended from YouTube in January 2021 following the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
The restoration of Trump’s YouTube channel is the latest in a series of moves by major tech companies to restore access to the former president’s accounts. Facebook and Twitter have also restored Trump’s accounts, though with certain restrictions.
