Russia is seeking to recover the fragments of a U.S. surveillance drone that was shot down in the Black Sea on Tuesday. The drone was reportedly flying in international airspace and over international waters when it was struck by a Russian fighter jet.
Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of Russia’s Security Council, said on Wednesday that Russia will try to get the wreckage of the American MQ-9 drone in order to study it. He also claimed that the incident was “another confirmation” of direct U.S. involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.
“I don’t know if we can recover them or not, but we will certainly have to do that, and we will deal with it,” Patrushev said. “And we will definitely look into it.”
The U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said in a statement that the drone was operating in accordance with international law and its flight path was in no way a threat to Russia.
The incident has raised tensions between the two countries and has prompted the U.S. to call for an investigation into the incident. It is unclear at this time if Russia will be able to recover the debris of the drone.
