A man was hospitalized Sunday after a zebra attacked him and bit his arm at a home in Circleville, Ohio, according to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office.

The man called 911 to report that his arm had been bitten off by a zebra. When the first deputy arrived at the scene, he found the zebra “hostile” and charging his patrol vehicle. The deputy used his air horn and sirens to scare the animal away long enough to apply a tourniquet to the man’s arm and get him in an ambulance.

The large male zebra continued to act aggressively and charged at the deputy’s cruiser, which had been positioned to keep the animal away from the victim. Despite the deputy’s efforts, the zebra continued to linger around the area and eventually was shot and killed.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident. No further information is available at this time.
