At least eight people have died after two boats capsized near the shore of Black’s Beach in San Diego County, California, officials said Sunday.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time Saturday, when a passenger on a separate panga boat, a type of small fishing boat powered by an outboard motor, called 911 to report victims in the water, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The dispatcher used GPS information from the caller’s phone to determine the location of the capsized boat, which authorities said was about 800 feet offshore.
Rescuers responded to the scene and found eight victims in the water. However, they were unable to access the beach due to the high tide and had to wade through “knee to waist deep water,” the release said.
Officials from the San Diego fire and police departments, Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Coast Guard and state and local lifeguards were among those who responded to the scene. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said in a statement that it was “deeply saddened by the loss of life” and offered its condolences to the families of the victims.
