Washington, DC – President Joe Biden has released his third budget proposal of his presidency, laying out his spending priorities and proposing to cut budget deficits by nearly $3 trillion over the next decade. While many of the president’s proposals are nonstarters for Republicans, the White House sees potential for bipartisan agreement in the area of crime prevention.

Shalanda Young, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, said in an interview that the White House believes there is room for bipartisan legislative accomplishments from pieces of the budget proposal. Young said that President Biden is sensitive to the size of the national debt and the unsustainable path of Medicare and Social Security, and has devised a way to address it.

The budget proposal includes an increase in the Pentagon budget to maintain the US as the arsenal of democracy. Additionally, President Biden has proposed funding for crime prevention, which Young believes should be a bipartisan effort. “It shouldn’t be controversial, it should be bipartisan, to agree that we should have more cops on the beat in this country,” she said.
