On Tuesday, US Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger criticized Fox News host Tucker Carlson for his commentary about footage from the January 6, 2021, insurrection. In an internal department memo obtained by CNN, Manger wrote that Carlson’s show failed to provide accurate context and “cherry-picked” from the footage to present “offensive” and “misleading” conclusions about the attack.
The family of U.S. Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died following the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol, also rebuked Fox News and Carlson. In a statement provided to CBS News, Sicknick’s family said they are “outraged at the ongoing attack” by Fox News and accused Carlson of cherry-picking footage from the Jan. 6 riot that “supports his delusional views that” it was peaceful.
Manger’s memo noted that the commentary failed to provide context about the chaos and violence that happened before or during the attack, including the fact that officers were “beaten with metal pipes, fire extinguishers, and flagpoles” and that “chemical irritants were used against officers.”
The Capitol Police Chief also pointed out that the commentary failed to mention the “heroic actions” of the officers who responded to the attack, including those who “put their lives on the line” to protect members of Congress and staff.
Manger concluded his memo by saying that the Capitol Police Department “will not be deterred by the offensive and misleading commentary” and will continue to “protect the Capitol and its occupants.”
