A fatal accident involving a Norfolk Southern train conductor has prompted the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the company’s safety culture.
Early Tuesday morning, 46-year-old Louis Shuster was at the Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. steel facility when a truck with a load of limestone collided with the front left side of the first train car. Shuster was outside the train when he was struck and later pronounced dead at the scene.
Norfolk Southern released a statement expressing their grief over the incident. “We are grieving the loss of a colleague today,” the statement said.
The NTSB is now investigating the incident due to the “number and significance” of recent accidents involving the railroad. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and the Cleveland Police Department are also involved in the investigation.
