Four Americans Kidnapped in Mexico While Traveling for Medical Tourism, Raising Safety Concerns

Four U.S. citizens were kidnapped while traveling in Mexico last week, bringing attention to the growing trend of medical tourism. Latavia “Tay” Washington McGee, 33, was traveling with Shaeed Woodard, Zindell Brown and Eric Williams for cosmetic surgery that was scheduled to take place Friday. Zalandria Brown, of Florence, South Carolina, confirmed that her younger brother, Zindell Brown, was one of the four kidnapping victims and that one of them planned to undergo “tummy tuck” cosmetic surgery in Mexico.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Monday that the Americans had crossed the border to buy medicine and ended up caught in the crossfire between two armed groups. The kidnapping has raised concerns about the safety of medical tourists, as well as the potential for exploitation of those seeking medical care abroad.
