Paul Manafort Agrees to Pay $3.15 Million to Settle Civil Case Filed by Justice Department

Paul Manafort, the former chairman of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, has agreed to pay $3.15 million to settle a civil case filed by the Justice Department. The government alleged that Manafort had failed to disclose more than 20 offshore bank accounts he ordered opened in the United Kingdom, Cyprus, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The civil case was filed in April 2022, and alleged that Manafort had willfully failed to timely report his financial interest in foreign bank accounts, and had failed to file federal tax documents detailing the accounts and failed to disclose the money on his income tax returns.

The government said false tax returns were filed from 2006-2015 and that the Treasury Department had notified Manafort of the fines and assessment in the civil case. Manafort agreed to pay the $3.15 million to settle the case, which included fines, penalties and interest.

The Justice Department has not commented on the settlement, and it is unclear if Manafort will face any criminal charges related to the case. It is also unclear if the settlement will have any impact on the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
