More than 20 people from around the country have been charged with domestic terrorism after a violent clash with police at a police training center under construction outside of Atlanta.
The Atlanta Police Department said the conflict began when a group of protesters used the cover of a peaceful protest to launch a coordinated attack on construction equipment and police officers. The protesters reportedly changed into black clothing and began throwing large rocks, bricks, Molotov cocktails, and fireworks at police officers.
The protest was held at “Cop City,” the site of a proposed 85-acre, $90 million training facility. The protest was in response to the death of 26-year-old environmental activist Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, or “Tortuguita,” who was shot to death by officers during a raid at a protest camp in January.
Flaming bottles and rocks were thrown at officers during Sunday’s protest, with police saying that the protesters could have caused “bodily harm.” The Atlanta Police Department said that the individuals charged with domestic terrorism will face “the full weight of the law.”
The incident is still under investigation, and the Atlanta Police Department has urged the public to remain peaceful and respectful of the law.
