New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu said on Sunday that Donald Trump will not be the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential nominee. Sununu made the statement during an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”
Sununu, a moderate Republican who is expected to announce his own presidential run, said he is a “lifelong Republican” who will support the GOP nominee. However, when asked if that would change should Trump win the nomination, Sununu said that is “just not going to happen.”
“So, I think he just has his lane and then there’s everyone else, which is I think a vast majority of the party that’s looking for an alternative,” Sununu said.
The governor added that there is “a lot of opportunity” to bring the Republican Party forward without Trump. He said Trump is “in the race,” but “he’s not going to be the nominee, that’s just not going to happen.”
Sununu’s comments come as Trump continues to rally his followers ahead of the next election. The former president has been indicted in multiple cases and is facing multiple legal challenges. It remains to be seen whether Trump will be able to secure the GOP nomination in 2024.
