On Thursday, James “Tim” Norman, former star of the St. Louis-based television reality show “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s”, was sentenced to life in prison for arranging the shooting death of his 21-year-old nephew in March 2016. Norman had hoped to collect a life insurance payment from the death.
At the sentencing hearing, Norman did not speak on his own behalf. His attorneys submitted several letters from family and friends asking for leniency, including from Norman’s mother and founder of the Sweetie Pie’s restaurants, Robbie Montgomery.
Norman and his nephew had both starred in the long-running OWN reality show about the family’s soul food business in the St. Louis area. The show ran for eight seasons, from 2011 to 2018.
The nephew, Andre Montgomery, was found shot to death in a car in St. Louis. Prosecutors said Norman had arranged the killing with the help of two other men, who were also convicted in the case.
Norman was convicted of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in October 2019. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder charge, and 15 years for the armed criminal action charge. The sentences will run concurrently.
