Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz and Jessica Garth, a representative from the State’s Attorney’s Office, announced Thursday that Patrick Wojahn, the mayor of College Park, Maryland, has been arrested on 56 counts of child pornography-related charges.

Wojahn, 47, was charged with 40 counts of possession of child exploitative material and 16 counts of distribution of child exploitative material, according to a statement from the Prince George’s County Police Department.

The mayor resigned Wednesday night, and his resignation is effective as of Thursday, a news release from the city said. Wojahn is currently in custody at the Prince George’s County Department of corrections and will soon meet a commissioner who will make a determination on his bond, or whether he will be held or released on pre-trial release.

Garth said that if Wojahn is not released, he will see a judge.

The City of College Park released a statement expressing their shock and disappointment at the news of Wojahn’s arrest. “We are deeply disturbed by the allegations and take this matter very seriously. We are committed to ensuring the safety of all of our residents,” the statement said.

The city said it is working with the Prince George’s County Police Department to investigate the allegations and will provide updates as they become available.
