ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria’s main opposition parties have called for a revote of the 2023 presidential election, citing widespread violence, rigging, intimidation of voters, and doctoring of results.
At a joint press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and African Democratic Congress said the election was an insult to democracy and called for Nigeria’s election chief to resign.
The parties said their parties would no longer be part of the ongoing collation process in the capital Abuja and added they had lost confidence in the electoral body Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.
Julius Abure, a spokesperson for the opposition, said the conduct of the election had been marred by widespread violence, rigging, intimidation of voters, doctoring of results and violation of the laid down electoral process, which was communicated by the national electoral body.
Partial results from the election show an early lead for the ruling party, but the opposition parties have decried the results as “heavily doctored and manipulated.”
The opposition parties have called on the international community to intervene and ensure a free and fair election. They have also urged the Nigerian government to take steps to ensure that the electoral process is free of any form of manipulation.
The election has been widely criticized by international observers, who have raised concerns about the integrity of the process. The outcome of the election will be closely watched by the international community, as it will have a major impact on the future of Nigeria.
