Key takeaways:

  • Mike Pence has announced he will make a decision by spring on whether to seek the presidency in 2024.
  • Pence suggested he would pledge to support the eventual GOP nominee if that’s a condition of participating in primary debates.
  • A federal judge is being asked to compel the release of documents related to the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Former Vice President Mike Pence has announced that he will make a decision by the spring on whether or not he will seek the presidency in the 2024 election. In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Pence said that he believes the GOP will have “better choices than my old running mate” Donald Trump.

Pence also suggested that he would pledge to support the eventual GOP nominee if that’s a condition of participating in primary debates. He said that voters had told him they want to “get back to the policies of the Trump-Pence administration.” Pence added that he and his family are “listening, reflecting, and talking to firms” to determine their “calling.”

The former Vice President also said that he wants to see “our politics return to the kind of civility and respect that Americans show one another every day.” This is seen as a clear reference to the former president’s distinctly uncivil discourse.

Meanwhile, a federal judge is being asked to compel the release of documents related to the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The documents are being sought by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, which is chaired by Rep. James E. Clyburn (D-S.C.).

Pence’s comments come as speculation mounts over who will run for the GOP nomination in 2024. While the former Vice President has not yet made a decision, he has made it clear that he is considering a run and will make a decision by the spring.
