A former member of the armed forces was arrested Thursday in Florida in connection with the murder of a pregnant soldier at a former U.S. Army base in Germany more than 21 years ago, the FBI announced.
Shannon Wilkerson, 42, was charged with one count of first-degree murder in the Nov. 3, 2001, killing of Pfc. Amanda Gonzales, the Department of Justice said in a news release. Gonzales was found murdered on Nov. 5, 2001, on a U.S. Army base in Hanau, Germany.
According to the FBI, Gonzales was stationed as a cook at the time of her death at Fliegerhorst Kaserne, a former U.S. Army base in Hanau, Germany. She was four months pregnant at the time of her death and was found in her third-floor barracks room after she failed to report for work.
FBI court documents allege that Wilkerson was responsible for the death of Gonzales, who died by asphyxiation. Wilkerson is currently being held in Florida and is awaiting extradition to Germany.
