On Wednesday, a Los Angeles judge sentenced Eric R. Holder, Jr., 33, to 60 years to life in prison for the fatal shooting of beloved rapper Nipsey Hussle in March 2019.
Holder was convicted of first-degree murder in July for shooting and killing Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, outside of his Marathon clothing store in South Los Angeles. The murder conviction alone carries a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
Holder’s sentence, which came down as expected, followed several months of delayed hearings as the defense attorney, Aaron Jansen, pushed for a reduced conviction and filed a motion for a new trial. Holder, dressed in orange jail attire, stared straight ahead throughout the proceedings and did not react when the sentence was read.
Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke handed down the sentence Wednesday after hearing from one of Hussle’s friends and listening to a letter from Holder’s father. The judge also took into consideration that two bystanders were wounded in the shooting.
Holder’s sentencing hearing had been postponed several times, including most recently Nov. 3. The judge ultimately decided that the defendant should serve the maximum sentence for his crime.
