President Joe Biden made an unannounced visit to Ukraine Monday to demonstrate his commitment to the country’s survival amidst the ongoing war. On Tuesday, Biden spoke in the gardens of the Royal Castle in Warsaw to reiterate the United States and its allies’ support for Ukraine.
“There is no sweeter word than freedom, no higher goal than freedom, no higher aspiration than freedom,” Biden said.
In his state of the union speech Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia is suspending its participation in the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty. Putin said, “And what, after that are we just supposed to let them to travel around our (nuclear) facilities?”
The war between Ukraine and Russia has been ongoing for nearly one year. Biden did not declare martial law or announce a new wave of military mobilization in his speech. He also did not outline a vision of how the war might end.
The United States and its allies remain committed to Ukraine’s survival, Biden said. He added, “The US and NATO openly state that their goal is the strategic defeat of Russia.”
