On Tuesday, the defense began its case in the double murder trial of Alex Murdaugh, a South Carolina lawyer accused of killing his wife and one of his sons. The first witness called by the defense was Alex Murdaugh’s surviving son, Buster Murdaugh.

Buster Murdaugh testified that when he saw his father in the hours after he learned of the fatal shootings, Alex Murdaugh was “destroyed” and “just broken down.” He was barely able to speak and was crying heavily.

Buster Murdaugh described his family as “close-knit” and said that disagreements were solved with civility. He said his father was a patient patriarch who was devoted to his family.

The defense is attempting to counter the prosecution’s argument that Alex Murdaugh is responsible for the killings. The prosecution has called more than 60 witnesses to bolster their case.

The trial is ongoing and the defense is expected to call more witnesses in the coming days.
