Congressman David Cicilline to Leave Congress Early to Take on New Role as President and CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation

Congressman David Cicilline, a Democrat from Rhode Island, announced on Tuesday that he will be leaving Congress early at the end of May to take on a new role as President and CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation.

In a statement released by his office, Cicilline said, “For more than a decade, the people of Rhode Island entrusted me with a sacred duty to represent them in Congress, and it is a responsibility I put my heart and soul into every day. The chance to lead the Rhode Island Foundation was unexpected, but it is an extraordinary opportunity to have an even more direct and meaningful impact on the lives of residents of our state.”

The Rhode Island Foundation is a nonprofit organization that works with individuals, families, organizations, and corporations to improve the lives of all Rhode Islanders. As President and CEO, Cicilline will be responsible for expanding on the work he has done for nearly thirty years in helping to improve the lives of all Rhode Islanders.

Cicilline expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Rhode Island’s First Congressional District, saying, “It has been the honor of my lifetime.” He will begin his new job on June 1, 2023.

The congressman’s early departure from Congress marks a rare resignation early in a session. He will be replaced by a special election to be held in the coming months.
