After 45 years of searching, the remains of an Auburn University student who disappeared in 1976 have been identified. On Monday, the Troup County Coroner’s Office positively identified the remains recovered from a creek in Chambers County, Alabama as belonging to 22-year-old Kyle Clinkscales.

The remains were found inside Clinkscales 1974 Ford Pinto back in 2021, after someone spotted the car in a creek in Cusseta, Alabama and called 911. The skeletal remains were then turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for DNA analysis.

Clinkscales was returning to school from LaGrange, Georgia the night of Jan. 27, 1976 when he vanished. Over the years, authorities drained lakes looking for him and the car.

The Troup County Sheriff’s Office has not released an official report in relation to the manner of death, but the FBI lab at the request of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has positively identified the remains as belonging to Clinkscales.

The 45-year mystery of Clinkscales’ disappearance has finally been solved, bringing closure to his family and friends. The Troup County Sheriff’s Office has asked anyone with information about the case to contact them.
