President Joe Biden on Thursday addressed the recent shooting down of three unidentified objects in North American airspace. He said that the US has no indication that the objects are related to China’s spy balloon program and are likely from private entities.
Speaking from the White House, Biden said that the intelligence community’s current assessment is that the objects were most likely balloons tied to private companies, recreation or research institutions studying weather or conducting other scientific research.
“We don’t yet know exactly what these three objects were but nothing right now suggests they were related to China’s spy balloon program or that they were surveillance vehicles from any other country,” Biden said.
The President also warned that the US will take down any object that presents a threat to the safety and security of the American people.
“Make no mistake, if any object presents a threat to the safety and security of the American people, I will take it down,” Biden said.
The shooting down of the objects has caused diplomatic tension between the US and China, who have insisted that the balloon was not intended for spying. Biden’s remarks were his first formal comments on the incident.
