A gunman opened fire at Michigan State University on Monday night, killing three students and wounding five others before shooting himself to death. The shooter has been identified as 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae.
Neighbors of McRae’s father’s home in Lansing, Michigan, told CBS Detroit’s Andres Gutierrez that McRae was generally quiet, but they often heard him shooting target practice in the backyard.
In 2019, McRae was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, a felony. He later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for possession of a loaded firearm and spent a year and a half on probation.
The shooting occurred after a Lansing Police Department officer patrolling the area saw McRae sitting on the back steps of an abandoned building smoking a cigarette.
The Michigan State University shooting is still under investigation. No motive has been established and the victims have not yet been identified. The university has released a statement expressing their condolences to the families of the victims and offering support to the community.
